Roosevelt Apartments
Downtown Decatur Illinois had been hit hard by factory closing and job losses. School closings left the historic Roosevelt School closed and wanting for use. Prince/Alexander was hired to develop designs for the adaptive re-use of the school and master plan for the development of the playgrounds and other site area for multi-family rental housing. We worked closely with the City, historic preservation and the developer to secure historic tax credits, low income housing tax credit sand City approvals. Several unusual spaces in the historic school required very creative solutions to incorporate the 73 dwelling units. The new construction town houses take clues from the collegiate gothic structure in details and borrow building set backs from the surrounding homes to compliment the pedestrian friendly streets and create protected inner courtyards for children.
